Failure is typically seen as the opposite of success, something to be avoided at all costs. But what if we flipped that narrative? What if failure is not just inevitable but desirable for growth and improvement?


How Failure Makes Us Feel

When we fail, we often experience feelings of disappointment, frustration, or even shame. But these emotions, while uncomfortable, serve as powerful motivators driving us to improve.


Why Do We Feel This Way?

We feel this way because failure highlights gaps in our performance or understanding. It's feedback we didn't anticipate but sorely need. It’s a call to action, pushing us to refine our skills and strategies.


Fail to Improve: A Counterintuitive Truth

"Away From" Motivation

In our sessions, we've often discussed two types of motivation: away from and towards. Most people are driven by 'away from' motivation; they wish to escape undesirable states or outcomes. It’s far easier to identify what we don't want than what we do.

"A lot of people can't tell you specifically what they want, but they can very easily tell you all the things they don't want."

Failure, thus, often serves as a stronger impetus for action compared to vague aspirations.


Failure as a Strong Driver...The Competitive Ladder

Consider a scenario involving two teams. Team A is outperforming everyone else, which leaves the other teams feeling like failures. This sparks a competitive spirit, pushing the underperforming teams to work harder to outdo Team A. When Team A falls behind, they too work harder to regain their lead. This dynamic fuels continuous improvement.


Failure as an Opportunity?


Failure is not an indictment of your abilities. Rather, it's a signpost indicating areas that require your attention. It offers a clear direction for your efforts:

  1. Identify the gap – What exactly went wrong?

  2. Formulate a plan – How can you address this shortfall?

  3. Take action – Implement changes to avoid repeating the mistake.


Defining Failure...

Failure can be described as the outcome or results not aligning with our expectations or predictions based on our efforts or actions. Simply put, it's when we don't achieve what we set out to do.

In conversations with various professionals, especially in high-stakes environments like racing, I've found that early improvements can often prevent recurrent failures. If drivers and riders work on their performance earlier in the week, they might avoid accidents and incidents later.

Failure should never be viewed as a bad thing. It's a teachable moment, an opportunity to reflect and adapt. For instance, if something doesn't go as planned during a race weekend, it’s a perfect opportunity to tweak your strategies.

  2. Action – Plan and implement strategies to avoid the same pitfalls.

  3. Feedback – Treat feedback as valuable information, not criticism.
